Bentley’s Horace was first printed in Cambridge in 1711, but the Amsterdam editons - laid out with text and notes on the same page and with a revised version of Tretur’s index - are considered superior. This is one of the best editions of the most outstanding achievement of Britain’s foremost (and most controversial) classical scholar of the eighteenth-century. Read more
Condition & Materials
4to. pp. [xxiv], 715, [i], 239, [i]. With copper engraved frontispiece, letterpress title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, light waterstainging in upper margin towards end of the volume. Contemporary Dutch vellum, gilt, a little soiled and with one or two ink stains, but sound. 1755 prize inscription to one Johannes Henricus van Hassels on front free endpaper.
