Edited by Cornelis Schrevel for Louis Elzevir, Dibdin suggests that early scholars gave it mixed reviews, but it is a typically handsome product of the press.
Condition & Materials
4to. 2 volumes bound as 5, pp. (xvi), 244, 245-476, 477-716; 286, 287-536, (xliv). Parallel Greek text with Latin translation, engraved architectural title-page to first volume, woodcut printer's device to second volume, woodcut initials throughout, occasional trivial spotting.
English panelled calf, circa 1700, with 19th century lettering pieces; minor wear.
Armorial bookplate of Beilby Thompson of Escrick Park in Yorkshire; probably the father (1686-1750 High Sheriff of Yorkshire) rather than his son of the same name (landowner and MP, 1742-1799) as ownership inscriptions on the free end-paper dated 1760 and 1761 indicate that the book passed to Richard Thompson (1744-1820), a son of Beilby senior from his second marriage.
