  • This map of Dorset was published in Philip Lea’s edition of Christopher Saxton’s county atlas, commonly known as the Lea-Saxton or Saxton-Lea. 

    Christopher Saxton created the first atlas of England and Wales between 1574 and 1579; which was also the first national atlas of any country. Read more

    The atlas enjoyed royal patronage as the driving force behind its creation was William Cecil, Lord Burghley, chief advisor to Elizabeth I through much of her reign.

    The original copper printing plates survived for about 150 years, and with revisions and additions (such as the addition here of the town plan of Dorchester copied from Speed’s map) they continued to be used.
