    Jean Fernel (1497-1558) was physician to Henri II and tutored Vesalius. He coined the terms ‘physiology’ and ‘pathology’ and lectured on Hippocrates and Galen. His Therapeutice was part of his highly influential Universa Medicina.  Read more

    De abditis rerum causis (On the Hidden Causes of Things), first published in 1548) discusses the philosphical rather than practical aspects of medicine, which Fernel appears to have regarded as the other side of the same coin. He draws heavily on ancient authors such as Galen to create a critical Neoplantonist reading of the divine and occult forces at work in the world, which includes a chapter on angelology and demonology. Our edition was published by the heirs of Andreas Wechel, Claude de Marne and Jean Aubrey.

    8vo. pp. 562, [xlii], [ii] blank; 272, [xxiv]. Woodcut portrait of the author in each volume. Contemporary calf, somewhat worn, rebacked; double-fillet border and arabesque centrepiece blindstamped to covers. Early annotations to endpapers by a number of different hands, inclding the ownership signature of Richard Pyraye, and a few scattered marginalia in the text. Members of the ‘'Pyray' family of Dorset are mentioned in the 1565 Visitation of Wiltshire; it appears to be a form of the Perry surname. Read less
