Late Theatre Services by Tramway is one of at least three posters designed by Haythorne for LCC Trams, the others being ‘Dull days made bright in the museums’ and ‘Strand on the Green Tram 26 to Kew Bridge’; the latter notes that it was designed at the LCC Central School of Arts and Crafts.
The London Transport Museum provides further biographical information for Margaret Haythorne: born in 1893, her brother was the artist Edmund Haythorne. In 1924 she became an associate member of the Society of Wood Engravers. Read more
Condition & Materials
Lithographed transport poster, 72 x 36 cm, black and white, laid on archival paper and linen. The image is of an elegantly attired man and woman looking down from a curtained theatre box, with a full house in the background. The unusual poster dimensions are the same as the fare charts, which were displayed on board the trams themselves.
