  • This is the Summer 1928 issue of this portrait format map of the London underground, issued 1928-29.

The style of the lines, stations and interchanges follows the series of maps created by Fred Stingemore, while the calligraphy is influenced by MacDonald Gill.  Read more

Stingemore and Gill’s pocket maps were designed as guides to the network for the everyday user, with the surface topography of the city stripped away. Perman's map is aimed at the visitor to London: the cover title is 'What to see and how to travel'. Major roads, parks and other recreational spaces are shown within the context of the Underground network, and a numbered key identifies sites of historical interest, museums and galleries, churches (including St Bartholomew the Great) and other public buildings.

The verso also shows connections with main line termini, which reinforces the impression that Perman's map was intended for an audience living beyond the limits of the system: "the place for this folder was at home with the telephone book and local bus and train timetables.”
