The Daily Telegraph was one of a number of newspapers to sponsor London underground maps, like our example from 1919 which also includes the tramways.
A series of passenger maps issued by the Evening News, published in various editions c.1907-1910, predated the earliest official Underground Electric Railways Company of London ‘common design’ maps showing an integrated network, and may even have spurred the UERL into action. Read more
The Telegraph map is uncommon, and this may be due to the success of official maps, as by 1919 they were widely available at stations (for free) and in guidebooks.
Condition & Materials
Lithographed folding map, printed area measures 76 x 101 cm. Printed in blue and red with inset map of ‘Theatre Land’ to bottom right. Minor wear, blank verso. Folds into blue printed paper wrappers, somewhat worn and dusty, with old ownership signature.
