  • This bird’s-eye view of the Suez Canal was published as a ‘Special Supplement’ of The Graphic (a weekly illustrated newspaper), issued on 2 September 1882, in between the British bombardment of Alexandria (July) and the battle of Tell El Kebir (September). British forces crushed a revolt against the Khedive led by Ahmed ‘Urabi, protecting British control of the Suez canal and leading to a British military occupation.
