This map of London is flanked by the giants Gog and Magog, legendary guardians of city, and with other appropriate imagery such as oranges and lemons (‘say the bells of St Clement’s’). The upper and lower borders illustrate popular nursery rhymes, and even the scale recalls the fable of the tortoise and the hare. The map is dotted with verse and apposite quotations, but it is also a practical street plan, with significant buildings represented pictorially.
Bullock donated all the royalties for this map to Great Ormond Street Hospital, as noted in the lower margin (this does not appear on later issues; possibly this arrangement ceased after the war). Bullock was a Civil Servant, but he designed decorative thematic and historical maps for Edinburgh publisher John Bartholomew & Son Ltd between the late 1930s and the 1960s. Many of his historical maps - including this children’s map of London - had a long life (and in some cases were reprinted into the 1970s) but others, such as his map of the 1938 Empire Exhibition held in Glasgow, or his 1946 world map celebrating the fledgling United Nations, are specific to a time and place and have become uncommon.
