    With an inset of Sevastopol, our map covers the region at the outbreak of the Crimean War of 1854-56, when it seemed likely that fighting would take place within the Ottoman Empire. Invading Russian forces withdrew before the British and French arrived in support of the Turks – which is when the Allies to took the decision to invade the Crimea – but it accounts for the broad geographical scope of our map.     A printed paper label gives the map an English title: ‘Seat of War, Map of the Ottoman Empire in Europe and Asia’. No importer or reseller’s name is given, but our example was evidently supplied for an English market.

    Lithographed folding map, printed area measurement 61 x 86.5 cm, original hand colour in outline, dissected into 21 panels and laid on linen, folding into contemporary cloth covers, slightly sunned. Read less
