With an inset of Sevastopol, our map covers the region at the outbreak of the Crimean War of 1854-56, when it seemed likely that fighting would take place within the Ottoman Empire. Invading Russian forces withdrew before the British and French arrived in support of the Turks – which is when the Allies to took the decision to invade the Crimea – but it accounts for the broad geographical scope of our map. A printed paper label gives the map an English title: ‘Seat of War, Map of the Ottoman Empire in Europe and Asia’. No importer or reseller’s name is given, but our example was evidently supplied for an English market.
