Austria remained neutral during the Crimean War, fearful of the expansion of Russian influence despite the recent military support it had received from Russia, which kept the Habsburg’s on the throne after the revolutions of 1848. Our map’s creator seems to suggest that the Ottoman Empire was vulnerable to being torn apart by its supposed allies, Britain and France. In the event, neutral Austria, left diplomatically isolated and exposed to invasion and revolution, suffered at least as greatly as any of the combatants.

Lithograph, printed area 22.5 x 29.5 cm on sheet 25.5 x 32 cm, blank verso with ink stamp of Munich collector Dr Franz Schnitzer (d. 1901; library sold at auction in 1902: #63 of the new contributions added by Einstein and Goldstein to their 1918 edition of Fagan’s ‘Collectors’ Marks’).
