Wyld’s map of the Theatre of War in the Baltic and Black Seas including the whole of Russia & Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea
This map was published in the early stages of the Crimean War, when it had not become clear when the focus of the fighting would be, and it was anticipated that naval actions in the Baltic theatre would be critical to the outcome. An Anglo-French naval assault on Kronstadt proved abortive, although there were modest allied successes in the Gulf of Finland and the blockade of Russia’s Baltic trade compromised the Russian war effort to an extent. Wyld also emphasizes the expansion of the Russian Empire since the reign of the Peter the Great two centuries earlier, noting acquisitions in Europe and Central Asia, and at the expense of the Ottoman Empire.
James Wyld junior inherited a thriving business on the death of his father in 1836. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and succeeded his father as Geographer to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Folding map, sheet size 34 x 50.5 cm. Origial hand colour, laid on linen, publisher’s advertisements to pastedown. Folds into into publisher’s cloth covers, minor wear.
