If thou art worn and hard beset with sorrows that thou wouldst forget
… Go to the woods and hills; no tears dim the sweet look that nature wears.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, quoted at the head of this map, made an early celebrity tour of the Lake District in 1868-69. Like any tour of 'Wordsworthshire' it included visits to sites illustrated here by Padden, such as Ullswater, Grasmere and the environs of Dove Cottage.

The map emphasises the landscape and outdoor activities such as fishing, rock climbing, fell walking and sheep dog trials. Note the British Railways motor vessel on Windermere. Commercial and passenger traffic on the lake had been operated by the LMS and passed to British Railways after nationalisation in 1948.
Daphne Padden (1927-2009) was the daughter of graphic artist Percy Padden (1885-1965); both produced railway and transport posters and publicity material for other bodies, such as the Post Office. Their careers did not overlap: Percy Padden was prominent in the interwar period, while Daphne Padden was active in the 1950s and 1960s. From the mid 1970s she turned her attention to landscapes and wildlife art.
